Thoughts on "Salespeak" by Roy F. Fox

Advertising is a very important aspect of selling a product. If a product is not advertised, then no one will know about it. Companies have to know how to make their products appeal to people. Fox starts off his essay with a story about a young girl named Pepsi. It is funny to think that one day, someone may name his or her child after a drink. However, it would not surprise me if this happens. Pepsi does a really good job of advertising its product. Pepsi hires famous actors and actresses to be on commercials or in ads for the product. When people see this, they want to try Pepsi. Pepsi realizes this and uses it to further their business. This is very smart on Pepsi's part and any other company’s part.
Fox also points out that advertisers now focus on people's desires. When a person sees an ad or a commercial that fulfills their desire for something, he or she wants to try that product. When a company notices this, then they keep advertising in this way. The companies are only concerned with making money and selling their products. People fall into this trap and are wrapped up in having the latest products.

I agree...The sad part is, it's probably not too far off from when people name their kids Walmart or Coke. There'd certainly be alot of money in doing so.

some people think that it's a bad thing when they advertise a product that you actually want and then go ahead and by it. while i certainly think that people do buy a lot of useless crap, there are some things that are worth buying. i love the tv show doctor who, so if i see an advert for an episode that i don't have, i'll consider buying it. the commercial didn't really create the want, the show did. the advert merely brought it to the surface. may there never be a kid named pepsi...
